More positive news, with a new academy structure being put in place. We've all seen how well the club has done out of developing young players and this year's increased budget is probably in large parts possible due to some of those deals. Great to have a pathway in place to start doing so again.

This is good but it will still be some way short of what we had when we were in the FL. We were lucky to go up in 2015 before the parachute payments ran out as it meant we didn’t have to dismantle the youth academy we set up in 2009. Sadly we didn’t achieve the same feat in 2020, meaning that we lost the structure over a decade in the making that developed EMC, Jack Taylor, Jamal Lowe, Ronnie Edwards, Hakeem Odoffin etc.

For me, the loss of that funding and the associated academy was the worst thing about relegation.

Great news when I read this, fantastic the club are putting money in to find the next Jack Taylor, Mason Clark or Ronnie Edwards. There will be untapped young talent out there and will be great if we can find one of two rather than other clubs finding them. Great news and can only benefit the club in the future.

I get why Barnet lost its academy, but don't understand why Boreham Wood has always had an academy. Is it due to location (as in outside Greater London)?

Have Boreham Wood ever produced a player from their academy to their mens team? I cant think of any

I know nothing about Boreham Wood's academy but as they have never been in the EFL they have never had an EFL funded academy, only to lose the funding following relegation.
I was reading something only recently from either Rochdale or Oldham fans saying if they're not promoted this season they'll lose their academy funding and so with that, their academy. As happened with us.

its just the name they call it- we didn't lose our academy we lost our central funding and chose to close ours. you get 2 years funding post relegation then you have to fund it totally yourselves!

I believe Iliman Ndiaye came through the BW academy though I don't think he ever made an appearance for the first team before being signed by Sheffield United.

An academy is huge for us as a London-based club, we need to hoover up the best players who get released by Premier League and Championship clubs

Agree. If done properly it will essentially return a profit.

We had a fully fledged, licensed academy whilst in thd EFL. If anything, it was graded in keeping with a Championship/L1 level. We have a lot of facilities that L2 clubs don't have. Explains how we got the likes of JT, RE and EMC through the door to start with. Part of the recent Hive development plans were for infrastructure to allow a higher grading, such as the indoor hall. I believe that to get top level grading you'd also need provision for player accommodation, maybe explains why a hotel was mooted a while back.

There's no stopping a club at any level doing their own thing, but it would ultimately have to pay for itself. In addition, better players will migrate to the better academies in the first place.

But this is a huge step forward behind the scenes. In my eyes, walk before we try to run. And if we get promoted, the building blocks for our system are already in place and players already involved should we have the means to upgrade the licence.
