Considering the utter donkeys we had in goal last season, if he can catch a football then we are already 10 points better off
Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
He made 10 appearances for Aldershot, his debut for them was against us at The Hive. Whilst I can't say that I remember much about him, I do recall that he was solid and didn't make any blunders. More than can be said for some of our keepers last season. I think he should be a good, reliable keeper.thebeekeeper wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 13:57 [
He was at our level as recently as last season (on loan at Aldershot), and Shots' fans thought he was excellent / seem disappointed that he isn't returning there for 2022/23. So that – plus DBs knowledge of what he's like in the dressing room – makes me think this is a solid signing.

Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
Certainly seems like the right profile of GK but I would perhaps be worried by the fact he hasn't played 40 games in a season for a little while
Nevertheless a good, experienced core of defence seems to have been built up with young and athletic full backs on either side.
Certainly think we should be better defensively next season

Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
Hopefully he can settle in well and be our number one for few years, he has been on loan from club to club for past 3 years or so. Sounds reliable and not let clubs down. As mentioned at Aldershot he was valued by supporters. Be nice for him to be number one at a club for few seasons.
So with Laurie Walker our new number one, two central defenders, a right back and holding midfielder it's now on to the attacking signings, the signings to date are the hardest according to DB (defenders) to bring in. So now looking forward to see who Dean has his eyes n for box to box midfielder, creative midfielders, and then strikers.

Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
Agreed. DB clearly feels that he knows and trusts these players. Just as important for me is that they also know and trust him. Listening to Walker's interview, it's abundantly clear that a main factor in him joining was to link up with DB again. Having players that want to play for the manager and will run through brick walls for them is massive. It's exactly the sort of desire and attitude we've been missing in large parts over the past few years. Of course this only gets you so far, but it feels like a step in the right direction.

From the Aldershot message board:
"Signs for Barnet. So much for the part time story Shame that. Quality Keeper."
"we have missed a pretty decent keeper in Laurie."

Good spot, looks like he played for them whilst he was out of the professional game to gain exposure.

Wealdstone signing Sam Howes from Horsham, hardly world beating either, it happens....

Good we have goalkeeper in place now.
Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
not clear if we have paid money for him? I assume so considering he was under contract at Stevenage. Unusual to pay a fee for a keeper at this level. His wages must be half decent to move away from a league contract

Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
I wouldn't expect we paid a fee – Stevenage would probably have been quite indifferent about the departure of a backup goalkeeper (they get to free up some wages, but equally have to go out and find a replacement), so it's likely that we just took on the remainder of the player's contract.
Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
As he was contracted for this season, Stevenage couldn't just get rid of him. Just like various others, including Ross Marshall who they made available for transfer. Steve Evans is just having a huge clear-out.
Re: Laurie Walker is our new GK!
either way i would suggest a decent amount of money has been moved around to make it work, whether for Walker, Stevenage or both!
