The World's against us!
The World's against us!
Although Cheltenham are, in my view, the worst team in League 2 at the moment, I felt they might nick something at Burton on Saturday due to Burton's nerves. It was the sort of 'must win' game that struggling teams often lose due to the pressure and expectation, especially in front of their own fans (see our game against Morecambe. And countless others, sadly.). But once Cheltenham had a centre half sent off in the first half, it was game over. I am convinced that, even with a one-goal lead in the second half, the fatigue and the nerves Burton would have been feeling would have a played a part and could easily have seen them drop two or three points had they been playing against eleven men. Of course that wasn't the case and they sealed a 2-0 win with a late goal. The sending off was an absurd decision, with the Cheltenham player sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity... despite the fact that Burton's Pearson wasn't denied at all and stuck the ball in the net. But the ref had blown, bizarrely, awarding a penalty from which they scored. Of course, there could have been a silver lining for us with the Cheltenham player Gallinagh being suspended for their next game (Cheltenham have 48 points but have won just 2 of their last 17 and so may struggle to get beyond 50)... but of course it's been overturned and he can play in their crucial home game on Saturday!
In the final reckoning there's a very good chance that none of the above will be of any consequence, but I had to comment as it could have been scripted by a bitter and twisted Enfield fan!

What other types were there?

Re: The World's against us!
From what I've seen and heard, Burton's penalty decision was a little bit dodgy and shortly before that, Cheltenham were unfortunate to have a goal disallowed which would have equalised the game. There's nothing special about that Burton team, they just seem to have a bit of luck going for them when they need it (See Macclesfield game).
We on the other hand are forever hitting the post and having chances cleared off the line. Lady luck is not a Bee, more likely a bitter and twisted Enfield fan.

Sadly not sure sure I can agree with this...
Burton have been said to have been particularly unlucky in many of their games this year, leaving them in this tight corner in the first place...
Couple that with Hereford's back pass which rolled into their net at Underhill, Charlie Taylor's gift of an equaliser at home to Shrewsbury and Chesterfield providing arguably the most bizarre goal of the season in the 94th minute, we've had our share of fortune.

Barnet, Barnet, Barnet, because...we're staying up, and it's the bondz the bondz the bondz the bondz the bondz the bondz the bondz that will keep us together...

Fine sentiments Jamie. Except you've been the main peddler of the nonsense that we've apparently been unlucky this season. Good that you've seen the light but don't throw stones from your glass house.

Re: The World's against us!
djhdjh, we have been unlucky this season in certain respects, just not in the ways laid out by the original poster.
Dennehy - at CB arguably our most crucial signing. Injured practically before the season's even begun.
Leach - our other key physical presence at the back (injured)
Kabba - other pivotal signing. Spent what must be close to 50% games injured. Match-winning performance v Northampton at home, then? injured.
Byrne - started turning the screw for us in midfield (injured)
Uddin - started getting things right under Fairclough (injured)
Holmes - scintillating performance against Bradford (injured)
Dunleavy - came in as cover for our faultering full backs (injured)
Cole, O Brien (injured)
It seems I will have to labour to death to the shortsighted ones (give generously to all) the point that we have had individuals of far greater quality than many teams in this division, but there's only so much 'team' you can build when the line-up is changing by the week. And yes - satan himself Mark Stimson also suffered to this.
Barnet fans in loss of perspective shock horror.

Re: The World's against us!
i do agree in some respect but a lot of those players were signed injury prone or had suffered a major injury recently in their career. It would surely have been more of a shock if they had stayed fit? Dunleavy wasn't being played and a lot of the others have not demonstrated their fitness is up to a full league season! There are one or two who dont fit into this catagory but most league 2 teams are going to get a few injuries throughout the season!
Re: The World's against us!
You regularly went on and on about how good the football we played was under Stimson just that the nasty hoofball opposition scored more goals, how our performances under Fairclough were those of a mid table team just that the irrelevant results were those of a relegation team.jamiefrbees wrote:djhdjh, we have been unlucky this season in certain respects, just not in the ways laid out by the original poster.

Those injuries aren't cutting it I'm afraid. Only Dennehy is standing out for me as a huge loss. Leach was crap last season and lucky to get a new contract, Byrne drifts in and out of games and hardly helped solve our midget midfield problem, Uddin had a terrible first half of the season before a few good games, Dunleavy was hardly played and doesn't look very good, Holmes looks talented but has hardly set the world on fire and we replaced Cole with an even better keeper in Walker (and he's not been missing for much of the season).
As for Kabba him being injured half the season is an occupational hazard, ditto McLeod who we signed injured. A calculated risk maybe, except that Mark Stimson football genius decided to make them our only contracted senior strikers.
Over a season you don't get unlucky and we certainly haven't been. Claiming we have been is the loss of perspective. The only perspective that matters is that we are almost certainly going down. Or am I being too harsh should instead praise us for being second bottom despite the ten plagues put in our way?

"Sadly not sure sure I can agree with this..."
"...we have been unlucky this season in certain respects, just not in the ways laid out by the original poster..."
As the original poster, can I just point out that I never argued that we have been unlucky this season. I just thought the tale of an extremely dodgy red card in Burton's favour helping them to a vital win, followed by the rescinding of that red card so that even the most tenuous silver lining is ripped away illustrated a chain of events which could make one laugh or cry hysterically at this time of heightened emotions, with our club on the verge of losing its football league status. Nowhere have I claimed that Burton have been lucky over the season, nor that we have been unlucky, so I don't know what it is that jamiefrbees isn't sure he can agree with. The tongue-in-cheek title of the thread?

Re: The World's against us!
Ahhh, the tongue-in-cheek title of the thread.
It's all clear now.
So I am the one who's wrong for taking issue with a statement 'The world's against us' for not seeing in crystal clarity that it was meant ironically? Tone is a slippery thing on the internet.
The football was good under Stimson. The passing and approach play was excellent at times. There was a distinct lack of team spirit and organisation by all means and the team was physically out of its depth.
Fairclough stepped in and got some great results. I don't count an away win at Bradford plus away points at Rotherham, Northampton and Port Vale as relegation results. Just so happened that for Fairclough he took over at a time when everyone was saying 'this game is a must-win, oh and this game is also a must-win, oh and this one too! We didn't win this match! Fairclough is rubbish!'
I really don't understand people that claim to support this club yet are so quick to damn and ruthlesly critcise players and staff alike. For me a huge part of supporting a football club such as ours comes down to an emotional and empathetic connection to those behind the scenes and wearing the black and amber and how we identify and relate their struggles and successes with those in our everyday lives. I support Barnet FC, which means I support Tony Kleanthous, which means I support the decisions made and try to see them through as far as they will go as I know said decisions have been made by people who also love Barnet Football Club. All you can do as a football fan is support the status quo because frankly you have no control over anything else.
Are you on the Arsenal season-ticket waiting list may I ask?

Re: The World's against us!
No I am not. And I resent the implication that I'm not a true Barnet supporter because I actually gave up a place on that very waiting list to watch Barnet 30 times a season for the last 8 years. Although it does rather show your arguments up that you're resorting to such lines.
Our football was crap under Stimson. Yes we played some pwetty passing but it was as consistently disorganised as I have ever seen us. It certainly was not unlucky as you regularly claimed at the time.
As for Fairclough yes we pulled some good surprise results out of the bag and our performances generally had more organisation and professionalism about them, although beating a bottom 8 team, drawing with a relegation rival and parking the bus against two out of form promotion candidates aren't quite as good as you seem to think. Look at our overall record under Fairclough (and I say this as a huge fan of his) - it was relegation form in its own right and dragged us further into danger.
The blind support that you demand is for matchdays. On here I call it as I see it. And when we were doing what I considered reasonably well under Fairclough in this league that meant defending him quite vehemently against criticism. When we are making what I think are bad decisions I say so, usually in quite a mild tone. But if you think we should all pretend everything's rosy in the garden you are asking for wilful stupidity. I refuse to give that.

Indeed. Mind you, I thought the exclamation mark and content of my post might have hinted that I was not really making an appeal to the Gods to stop smiting us with such dreadful, season-long ill-fortune, while blessing Burton with all the luck in the world (IRONY ALERT!!!!!). Just a note on a chain of events so exasperating/amusing/frustrating as to be worthy of comment, I thought. Not to worry, though, next time I write something vaguely less than totally serious I will follow it with LMFAO PMSL ROFL LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was the football under Stimson good? I suppose it was until the opposition scored, then it was desperation when the second goal quickly followed and we went on to lose.jamiefrbees wrote:

There is a huge difference between supporting a club and blindly adoring everything they do. Most supporters are realistic about the players , very few actually "damn and ruthlessly criticise players and staff alike".
I too support Tony Kleanthous but I do wonder who these decision making people ( plural) are to whom you're referring "who also love Barnet Football Club". Paul Fairclough? Directors? Graz ( who decided to drop Deering) ?
