Top 91 Players of All Time - The Full List from 91 - 1!

Post: # 18961Post Moonchild_Bee »

**I've merged all the separate topics - so you have the complete 91-01 run in in one handy place - the complete thread may read a bit funny due to how I merged it though - sorry!*

Well, the scores are in...! Although these might seem like the also runs, remember that these players have stood out from the thousands that have gone through the Underhill changing rooms. These are the players that might have inspired youngsters to return and created lifelong fans (which Andy Pape did for me :D ), the players who were good but not great, but have been amongst some of our fans favourites.

Thank you all for voting. Your top 10's were weighted (10 points for your first choice, and 9 for 2nd etc down to 1 point for your 10th favourite player). Where players had the same number of points, i've ranked players by number of votes received (i.e. Spike Carter and John Fairbrother received the same number of points, but Spike is ahead in the rankings by virtue of attracting 5 nominations ahead of Fairbrother's 2).

THE LIST IN FULL!

Interesting to see some of the choices in there.

Shame we didn't quite manage to reach 100 but still great that so many players are remembered fondly.

Just building up the tension Dan! Actually have been so busy at work been unable to post as quickly as I wanted. I did want to make a few comments on each of the top 50, but will leave that to other people. Watch out for 50-41 coming up soon...

Top 91 Players of All Time - 50-41

Post: # 19393Post Moonchild_Bee »

Here we go.. underway with the definitive 50 favourite players to have graced the venue of legends.

Of course, being a 'favourites' list is handy as there can be no arguments over who was better. And of course there is obvious bias towards more recent players. Why else would Jake Cole appear above Andy Pape?

Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find a comprehensive Player Appearance stats (both BFCSA & Downhill Second Half have some stats, but not prior to 2002) so cannot provide (unless someone can help).

50) Simon Clist that penalty against Carlisle
49) Eddie Stein that run and cro.. oh wait
48) Andy Pape the play off against Blackpool
47) Phil Gridelet £175,000 from Barnsley (then a non league record)
46) Derek Payne the ankle nips and that ban for that
45) Kenny Gillett now playing in front of 60,000 regularly - well - 4 times a year
43) Jake Cole the first keeper we had confidence in since returning to the league
43) Phil Simpson the goal against the swans
42) Neal Bishop and he really did eat the league
41) Greg Heald for many things, for being captain, for caring, for kicking the streaker, for that sideways dribble at Hayes..

Feel free to add your comments and memories!

Interesting to see players on this list who during their time here were not some (and I emphasise the some!) fans' favourites..
Yes, I'm thinking of Dwane Lee (who somehow made it onto someone's choice of worst-ever Barnet XI) and Ken Charlery.
Peter Beadle made a big impression on some people in the dozen or so games he played for us. I think I only ever saw him play in that match at Stevenage but he certainly showed that physical presence up front can make a difference.
If Richard Graham had managed to make more of an impact in League 2 for us than he would have ended further up the list but he's still my favourite player of 2004/05.
Warren Goodhind was going to be a star for us until he suffered that horrific injury at Hednesford. I don't think he was ever as good again afterwards.

And it's good to see Frank Murphy on the list as well. He always brought a bit of guile into any match he played. I remember a particularly good cameo performance by him in our FA Cup replay win at Northampton Town in 90/91 and of course the part he played in transforming our moribund title challenge towards the end of that season crowning it with the goal of the season against Welling Utd.

I'd add for Andy Pape that he was one of the ones who stayed after the meltdown of '93.
Eddie for doing the Barnet holiday soccer schools as well.
Derek Payne was brilliant for us in 92/93.
Phil Gridelet controlled the midfield for us but didn't actually play that many matches for us. He was only at Underhill for half a season!
Phil Simpson was someone who would always display some nice touches in midfield every match
Greg Heald is our record signing and gave us full value over the 6 years he was here,

I always liked him. Thought he did a good job.

Others in these parts think he was the worst player to ever wear a Barnet shirt. Amongst others.

WTF?

Why?

I always liked Heald. Good, old fashioned centre-back and captain.

Although, I didn't catch many Barnet games after 2001 until 2003 when he left, so I don't know if something happened in those 2 years that I'm not aware of. :?:
