Re: Chesterfield (Hive) The Sofa So Good? Match Thread
Yes we had players at the back covering but that in my opinion didn't result in us not winning.
Harry Taylor played very well, Sparkes played okay and got some good passes away... Ironically Reynolds was all over the place at times and looked like he was running in treacle and Che... He was terrible offensively. So slow at releasing the ball time after time.
EMC did nothing other than win a dodgy pen. Vasiliou should of come on at half time.
Taking Boucard off and replacing with Barham we lost control of the midfield for the last 20.Barham just bundles into players and offered zilch.
Jack Taylor, Elito, Akinola all played well but as soon as we get close to the penalty area it falls apart.
Chesterfield were crap yet we hardly laid a glove on them.
We passed beautifuly with no shots or sustained pressure.
Anyway another point towards 10th place at the end of the season.

I thought that was a much better performance. Much more energy and drive and forward movement. Still incapable of really hurting them in the box though. I don't understand what has happened to EMC , he just isn't sharp as he was .given the number of players out of position it could have worse! And why put coulthurst on the bench and then not use him?
... All we have to do is keep winning the next game ...

The "we'll be fine when players come back from injury" line might have washed a couple of years ago but it's very clear now that a swathe of injuries is part and parcel of supporting this football club.Roy57 wrote:john dockers shorts wrote:Genuinely don't think we will be any better with this squad. That is as good as it gets folks.
Don't think that's fair. Especially with santos. Sweeney. Courthirst. out injured. Alexander only just back. Got more others coming back soon that's without making any signings. Think players need more encouragement especially after effort today.
The decline in how this club is run is becoming so obvious now. In 14/15, Charlie Macdonald only had to chip a toenail for Allen to bring in a forward on loan. Now, we've got six defenders out injured and no centre forward and not a hint of a loan anywhere.

A good point. To recover twice with a makeshift defence. Chesterfield had old school centre halves. Very strong in the air but hardly mobile. Chesterfield had flying wingers too - I wish we had flying wingers too.
Players of match for me were Reynolds, H Taylor, J Taylor and Elito. Think Sparkes did well as emergency right back, but match today exposed wisdom of having a squad with too many proven sicknotes - Boucard cannot last 90 mins, Vilhete, Santos injured - remember Yakubu was released because of this. Ironically Robson would have been the defensive fall back option.
Jack Taylor is a class player. Best hitter of the ball on pitch for Bees. Loach saved well on a number of occasions.
Around 18 yard area we are too shot shy. If you don't try you won't score. We urgently need someone who can win headers in midfield and up front too. We concert possession time and again because players simply make no effort in even trying to get head to ball. At least Barham attempted headers
EMC has to improve anticipation of where ball can be passed to. For me he also lacks conviction and self confidence and needs to go for it more. Still reactive more than instinctive. If he can improve on this as season progresses, he may finally score some goals.

Tarpey and Hyde scoring today. Should we have offered Tarpey part time terms? Think back to Paul Showler. What a player, yet he remained part time for at least some of the time.
Some quality Non League players will not give up part time terms.

Just back from the game. We were fortunate to get a draw mainly thanks to Scott Loach. We really need a number 36 (Fondup from Wrexham) who they signed on Friday. What a difference he would have made to our side.
It's all been said really. very lucky penalty. We could have scored more than one in the first half but in the second half we were poor and even worse when Boucard went off. Some players had a shocking game but I am not going to name them.
A mediocre season lies ahead. No wonder barely 1000 people turned up.

Agreed, I thought it was a good team effort. DC had listened and cut out the passing about aimlessly at the back. Their second goal was a defensive blunder but that was the worst it got with what was a makeshift defence.Roy57 wrote:john dockers shorts wrote:Genuinely don't think we will be any better with this squad. The penalty was fortunate but we did have several close calls for a pen so over the 90 minutes we deserved one!
Lovely goal from Jack Taylor, early contender for Goal of the Season.
For all that we took 7 points from our first 3 matches, I found today's match far more entertaining.
Just good that we now have a whole week before our next match, hopefully some of our injured players will benefit from the break.

Geez, I don't come on very often these days because of the arseholes that insist on bringing politics into a football forum, but Jesus Christ, are we still banging on about "it'll be ok when the injured players are back"?

I agree. I don't like going after other fans, but I can't believe fans who have followed the club for the past couple of years actually believe the injuries are going to go away.Norfolk & Chance wrote:Geez, I don't come on very often these days because of the arseholes that insist on bringing politics into a football forum, but Jesus Christ, are we still banging on about "it'll be ok when the injured players are back"?

Win lose or draw I am enjoying the games under D C. with so many players missing and Dan Sparkes having to play full back, it's becoming farcical. However this scratch side ran their socks off, and you can't ask for more.
The injury problems are unfortunate, however the failure to bring in a striker is of our own making and unacceptable.
Can anybody tell me what Scott Loach is doing playing in the national league, that double save late on was world class.

Re: Chesterfield (Hive) The Sofa So Good? Match Thread
First game of the season for me. Impressed with the new signings, particularly Loach. Think we can all see the need for a striker, we were comfortably the better 'footballing' side without ever really creating clear-cut chances. Echo the above points that if we had been the team to sign Fondop, we would have come out on top. Thought we were defensively as good as could have been hoped for given the makeshift nature of the back four. Sparkes was caught out a few times, especially when Mason Clarke was playing in front of him, but was more effective than normal going forward, as he was given more time and space to get crosses in and make overlapping runs.
I think if you take away the seemingly inevitable injury problems we face and bring in the striker we're all crying out for, this squad can comfortably reach the play offs. Two very big 'ifs' though.

We really need to cut down on the unforced mistakes

Scott Loach today saved us! Scoring from a solo wonder goal by jack taylor and a questionable penalty. Yes there was a little more intensity compared to Tuesday however nowhere near the level required to compete for promotion. The lack of the physical number 9 is so evident, their number 36 gave Reynolds a nightmare at the back. Bullied our back line even when there was hopeless ball hooded up front from their CB. We had all the time since the end of the season, through the transfer window, before the season started to sign a number 9. It’s gonna to be a real challenge to find a competent striker as the season has started, rather no striker then end up with Byron Harrison part 2. The crowd of 1000 just highlights everything wrong. 872 supporters today, less compared to Tuesday night where there was 997. No words. This club is declining.
