2018 in review...

Post: # 264490Post MCB »

So on SAT 30 DEC 2017 Exeter City beat us 2-1 at St James Park with a last minute winner that left us in the bottom 2:

21 Morecambe
22 Chesterfield
23 Barnet
24 Forest Green

This was our line up:

21 Craig Ross GK
20 Mauro Vilhete DF
24 Andre Blackman DF
4 Charlie Clough DF
5 Ricardo Santos DF
18 Wesley Fonguck 61' MF
7 Ryan Watson 69' MF
12 Jack Taylor MF
10 Jamal Campbell-Ryce (C) MF
9 John Akinde 85' FW
11 Shaquile Coulthirst FW

34 Renell McKenzie-Lyle SUB
2 Richard Brindley SUB
6 Michael Nelson SUB
13 David Tutonda SUB
14 Simeon Akinola 61' SUB
26 Dan Sweeney SUB
23 Alex Nicholls 85' SUB

Only 4 of those players are still playing league football, Mark McGhee was our manager.

Look back at the year - it's been bloody awful. Relegated. Best player left. Crowds dwindling.

But, ex-legend who loves attractive football in charge. FA Cup 3rd round for first time in a decade. Serious crack at FA Trophy on the cards. Our injured players to come back. The possibility of a run into the play offs.

Am I wrong to feel positive for 2019? I mean it can't be worse that 2018 can it?

Oh yeh, and happy new year :)

Not just been bad for 2018. We aren't at the bottom of the pyramid so it isn't a case of Yazoo, "The Only way is up!"

2018, a bit like numerous seasons before: disaster.
2019, time to look for a new home in Barnet, Herts. And of course, someone in charge who cares about the history and longevity of this great club.

With this set of players I just hope we do enough to stay in this division this season.

We’ve lacked any sort of momentum this season. If it starts with that away win at Dags, and we go on a winning run, then I’ll start to believe.

Anything can happen in the FA Cup, being an underdog is brilliant as the pressure’s all on the favourite.

Looking at the table, should Gateshead slip up, and we win our games in hand, the play offs are very much a possibility.

If we find some consistency under Mr Currie, and play some attractive football while we’re at it, we might be in business.

Here’s to a Black and Amber 2019. Have a wonderful new year fellow Bees.

not just Gateshead, Harrogate have same points and played 1 more. i still can't see Solihull, Harrogate and Gateshead all making top 7 so if we can find some consistancy and a consistant goalscorer there is no reason why we can't make top 7.

In all seriousness, a healthy 2019 to all.
We actually have to be here to experience the mind numbing, ball breaking, heart-aching shiteness that is supporting the mighty Bees (with occasional brief forays into sheer joy).
A head bow to those no longer able to experience the lows and highs.
Here's to a 3 - 1 spanking of the Wood tomorrow, if only to see John C's reaction.
Happy New Year :-)

Happy New Year to all fellow Bees.

I have a feeling that 2019 is going to be a good year for the Bees - which is why I am presently second from bottom of Reckless's Prediction league!

Ah well!

Love the OP – Happy New Year!

Yes, 2018 was disastrous, but yes, there is also reason for optimism.

Certainly one reason not to be despondent at least is that our first half of the season so far, disappointing and often frustrating as it has been, compares very well to the other three of the last four teams to go down from League 2!

The fact is it’s always going to be difficult when you suffer the shock of falling out of the football league; you have a high turnover of players and always lose any stars, those remaining suffer pay cuts, there’s an air of despondency around the club etc. (In our case it was arguably even tougher in the form of the most ludicrously extensive injury crisis I’ve ever known)

That’s got a lot to do with why Hartlepool and Orient last season, and Chesterfield this, all struggled so badly in their first half-season in the Conference. It’s also why, for all the stick that Still has received, I thought that with players returning and the storm of the early months withstood, he would turn it round and at least get us up in the top 10 or so by the end of the season, before having a real crack at promotion next season.

Another reason to be cheerful, at least, is the FA Cup run. Amidst all the misery about in the last few weeks, there’s a sense that things were much better in the good old days. For me, one of those good old days from before my time has always been the FA Cup run to the 3rd round in 1983 (?) when we earned the right to play Bristol Rovers, to whom we lost 3-1 (?). Well, this season not only have we made the Third Round again, but we’ve already gone one better and beaten Bristol Rovers!

All the more reason to enjoy the fruits of that triumph (and the subsequent one over Stockport) in the form of our Big Day Out in Sheffield at the weekend.

I just want to forget 2018 Barnet FC-wise, but this year promises to be very exciting, both for the Bees and me personally. Being up completely sober at 8am on New Year's Day? That hasn't happened since I was about 15!

Haven't all our Conference/National League wins come in odd years? 1991, 2005 and 2015? Now there's a good omen!

Happy New Year to everyone! I know I can be a bit hot headed on here sometimes but I love you all - even Foxy! :D

Didnt we win 5 matches on the trot earlier this season?

The only time we had any real momentum in 2018 was when MA was in charge. Make of that what you will. :grrr:
