Barnet v Runcorn

Post: # 255197Post moortownbee »

My friends dad is chairman of Runcorn Linnets (formally Runcorn). He’s putting together something for there website. One home programme each year from 1935 and one from each team they’ve played away.,,,here’s the one he’s chosen for Barnet.

Great Barnet team!

Runcorn number 14 is indeed the comedian John Bishop.

It was indeed a great team - and that season was the real start of our push to get out of the Conference (Upwards, I mean, for benefit of younger fans).
Three strikers in the starting eleven. And what a bench!
Barnet 3 Runcorn 0.
Alexander, Sansom (2).

I only saw Robert Codner in his 2nd spell for us, but he seemed to be the eternal substitute.

Was he actually rated that highly considering how successful he ended up being in the football league? Certainly played more league games than most of Barry's more heralded midfielders (albeit perhaps not at such a high level as some made).

My memories of Codner are magnificent thighs and wildly over hit shots, a few of which actually hit the net.
I always liked him as a player but was far happier when he passed instead of attempting a shot.

OMG!! I think that's the game I went to on the coach (only went to Runcorn once - which was considered enough). Carter scored for them and in the last embers of the match 'God' came belting down on goal to equalise in front of the delirious few.

I'm sure I saw Nicky smiling before he had even scored - Its like he 'knew'!!

I do remember the ground being very bleak.

Christ, I think I was at that one too.
Great great photos, thanks for sharing.
The bottom one looks like it could from the 1940s but for the sliver of amber.

My enduring memory of Runcorn's ground was the motorway which ran at high level across one end of the ground.

Runcorn came to us at Underhill one summery April day (can't remember the year). The ground was jammed packed and I think (even though this was the day of Flashman) the attendance was announced as over 5000. The Bees were a strong team. We needed to win and lost 1-0. That should be the programme which Runcorn have on their list. This was a great win for them - much against the odds.

That was the following season - 87/88!
Didn't Barry Fry say beforehand that you would be able to bet your house on a Barnet victory for that match?

I reckon these two now could do a better job than the hopeless shower that we currently have.
