One other thing I'd like to mention is our goal difference now. If we missed out on the play-offs or ended up relegated because of it I'd be gutted. It felt like we gave up yesterday and Pompey turned the screw. Just hope it doesn't come back to haunt us. I can't see us hammering many teams this season so dropping down to 17th feels like a wake-up call. Carlisle at home could have been a massacre too. Are we really making progress? Realistically out of two cups is disappointing as well. Maybe what Pauln50 said is right? Martin Allen trys and gets the fans on side but he needs to get rid of Batt and Tomlinson on loan instead of playing mind games with referees.

Morecambe have yet to draw this season in the league and are in a play-off position. They're not a bigger club than us.

Obviously you've got to make the decision that's best for you but don't talk rubbish about the Conference winning season. Davids had the team in mid-table mediocrity going nowhere and frankly they weren't very good to watch either with the endless slow sideways passing.

Allen signed key men including Akinde, Togwell and N'Gala straight down the spine of the team and had them playing a rather different formation and style, more direct but scoring more goals than we did under Davids. He also signed Lee Cook and Charlie MacDonald
Not rubbish at all and in fact what you said is the same as what I said.

MA used the REMNANTS of Davids team, indicating that I know he brought in new signings, but he beat the skill out of the team.

Did you manage to recoup your train fair Mick?
Sadly the Cardiff supporters at that time were tight bastards and were only throwing 1p & 2p coins. I left them on the floor of the stand for the cleaners. I thinks the players made a few quid, which was handy as Flashman wasn't paying them at the time!

I'm not MA's biggest fan, but winning the Conference was pretty much all his achievement. He doesn't owe much to Davids at all besides establishing Yiadom and Johnson at full back, and signing Luisma (though Omar brought him over I think)

Our style is awful to watch and the man is clueless over subs and tactics. I will be going to the Exeter game, only my second this season after five years of missing only two games (and that because I was in hospital) but you know what, I am not missing it a bit. I have been watching 50 years now and it is MA who has beaten the love of Barnet out of me.
The main reason I am going to the Exeter game is I have a pile of old programmes for a friend. If there is no improvement by then I think that will be me done with watching the Bees until Allen goes.
If we won it despite MA, why did Davids/The Dutch pair not have the same level of success. Davids resigned in January 2014. We were 10th and 3 points off of the play offs.

MA signed Togwell, Cook and of course Akinde. Perhaps we should criticise Davids for not achieving anything with the players at his disposal? The football at times under Davids was dreadful and no different to what MA offers up at times.

What on earth was Gambin playing at for one of them? He's seriously going backwards at the moment. I think we played the occasion rather than the opposition which to be honest on paper aren't that great.

Thank god the "occasion" is only once a year... sure we will be back for it again next season!!

No manager completely rebuilds a team from scratch. The best managers take the best of what they inherit and add to it. Regardless of whether or not it was Davids or someone else before MA, he would have adapted his plans based on what he inherited.

I'm not a massive fan of MA's style or approach but I recognise he did brilliantly in creating a better spine for the team with Akinde, Togwell and Dembele coming in.

I find that rather surprising - surely we've had a hell of a lot worse managers than MA during that time. I wouldn't say I'm exactly happy with the way things are at the moment, but I've been watching for nigh on 48 years now and we've known far worse times than this. For instance, surely the style of play under John Still was just as bad, not to mention the sheer ineptitude of some of the more recent incumbents.

Paul, if you got through Mullery you can get through anything.

Precisely this. This is only my 17th season and at least half of them have been worse than this. I have no wish for the depression of endless defeat, even if it is a lovely footballing man like Mark Stimson who's delivering it. At least with MA it is not season upon season of relegation struggle / hard luck stories / ineptitude.

I daresay if I'd gone to Portsmouth v Barnet as a neutral on Saturday I'd have appreciated the entertainment on offer. Even as it was I found it a decent match. But in the return fixture I'd far prefer a dull 1-0 win.

Yes. I remember Mullery well. In fact singing along with the players at Orient telling him where to go was great. I wrote to him as well and actually at least I got an answer from him, albeit written on a piece of foolscap with most of the players names spelt wrong. I still have that somewhere in my program collection. But crumbs that was a long time ago and where are we now. The same place and now being 64 I really can't be bothered anymore.

Part of the problem is that those seasons under Stimson, Robson, Sanchez we were playing with a budget that meant that avoiding relegation was an achievement in itself. That wasn't the case with Mullery which, along with his bizarre tactics, meant that he got very little time from the supporters.

We've now got a budget that means we should be going for promotion (chairman's belief if not necessarily mine) so plodding along around mid-table isn't good enough. Mid-table, playing not very attractive football, is even less palatable.

I wasn't at the game, but having now seen the goals, it looks to me like the primary cause of the first goal was Taylor (I think) giving the ball away 25 yards from our own goal. Not to scapegoat Taylor, as it's the sort of mishit pass that can happen many times in a game, but that small yet costly error was surely more decisive than Nelson's involvement (or lack thereof).
