I very much doubt he had much say in whether this guy was arrested and charged.
So, if it wasn't in an aggresive manner but a humorous manner, all charges would be dropped?

If I was the steward I'd be embarrased to give a statement.
The aggression is kind of needed for it to be common assault.

Hope he is nursing his injuries okay. Poor lad.

The BBC has removed the photo from the page, preferring to show the scale model he took to court instead.

However.....

The amnesia may well be related to the amount of puff required to inflate that sea monster.

So if whilst striking the steward, this 50 year man, is also racially abusing him, the comic effect of hitting someone with a grey inflatable shark would negate the abuse?

Yeah, that's what I was getting at mate.

Right on the money, you.

Nicely ducked. But we'll assume you know that of course it wouldn't.

So we can say that rather than the inflatable being a grey shark, it is more a red herring.

The guy wasn't charged with assault for giving a couple of taps on the head with an inflatable. But it makes a good story. He was charged because he was witnessed threatening the steward. If he'd just gone up to the steward empty handed and said the same things in the same manner, he would still have been arrested, but then it wouldn't have made for such an amusing story.

I'd say the Grimsby fan I quoted earlier summed it up quite well. A fun day for them which ended in victory but also cost one of their fans a criminal record and great expense. I was at the game and as I knew a Grimsby fan through a friend was sending him clips of their crowd having obvious fun from my seat in the west. One of the clips at the end I titled, would love to be a Grimsby fan right now , as they were absolutely fantastic at that point (not literally though). The club really needs to look at its treatment of away fans as they are crucial to our progression and employ stewards capable of controlling intimidating people.

Just scanned the Grimsby forum and it's laughable. According to a few numbskulls on there it was a balloon and he would have got off if it wasn't London and he wasn't Northern.

Others are stating that he ran up to the steward and shouted "You can f***ing have it an' all" which was overheard by a policeman. Now that evidence is supposedly questionable as there was so much noise when they scored.

And another photo

They were also throwing things onto the pitch... Inflatable or not, that's not really acceptable while a game is in progress. I also heard some months ago from a very good source that at least one other member of staff was kicked by a Grimsby fan, though why it hasn't yet resulted in a prosecution I don't know.

I'm really not sure what your gripe with the club is in this instance? The police arrested him, the club's stewards did not retaliate unlike the FGR incident and the steward in question seemingly gave evidence off his own back.

Or the one who tried to restrain me for exchanging words with Josh Payne during the Woking game.

Absolute overkill.

I can just imagine the courtroom - "He hit this poor man with an inflatable shark - the intent was there and the steward in question is clearly traumatised".

What an absolute joke.
Er, what if the Sharks inflatable dorsal fin grazed the steward and he didn't have any savlon at home?
