I don't read anywhere as much as I used to but I will always read an Iain Banks book. For his science fiction stuff he uses Iain M Banks.
If you are into S.F. then it is a must read and if you have not read any of his S.F. work then it's best to start at the beginning, "Consider Phlebas".

So if you are looking for a summer read here's the man.

Re-reading "The Ascent Of Rum Doodle" by W.E.Bowman.

I can't recall how many times I've read it, but it's not enough. Bill Bryson calls it "one of the funniest books you will ever read" and I can't argue with that.

Sorry, i'm rubbish at this editing lark, have amended now - sorry for any sleight!

I'm working my way through Christopher Brookmyre - a scottish Carl Hiaasen if you like (if you havn't read any Carl Hiaasen, then do).

Frequently found for 50p in most good Oxfam's and well worth picking up. The below book is a good starting point, considering the world is supposed to be ending today (http://www.familyradio.com/index2.html)

I picked up "Under the Greenwood Tree" by Thomas Hardy from the classics section in Waterstones recently. For my laziness I'm still only on page 4. Should I carry on or just watch the film?

I'm also looking to get back into some of Tim Parks' novels.

Not trying to be clever but I am in the middle of three! Superb case study of the Beatles instruments and amps "Beatles Gear" by Andy Babiuk, The Rolling Stones biography by Phillip Norman and "Stig of the Dump" by Clive King as I found it in the loft last week!

Funny you should mention Iain M Banks - hadn't read any before, but just finsished reading 'The Player of Games' - good book.
At the moment I'm reading Eternity, by Greg Bear.

One book I always recommend to SF fans (and anyone else) is 'The Sirens of Titan' by Kurt Vonnegut. One of those books that you never forget - like his classic 'Slaughterhouse 5'.

I've just started to read 'The Father, The Son and the Ghostly Hole' by Rory McGrath. It resonates so much with my strict Catholic upbringing and my school years at FCHS....it is very funny!

I'm actually reading 'On The Origin of Species' which for a scientific paper is very readable. It' impressive how accessible and interesting it is also taking into account its age.

I did take a break from it while I was on holiday though and read 'Cinderella Man' as I enjoy boxing biographies.

Next from my pile of books I haven't read yet will probably be 'Let The Right One In'.

Enjoying The Wobble, and I'm afraid I'm one of those that gets Goosebumps at the sight or sound of a Spit or Hurri, and this book is understatedly brilliant.

This because I do not get much say in it:

Amelie the Seal Fairy: Rainbow Magic

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amelie-Seal-Fai ... 489&sr=8-1

This because a colleague I work with authored it and he will not shutup until everyone else has read it:

This because after the Vulcan Bomber it is the best machine ever:

Spitfire: Portrait of a Legend Leo McKinstry

This reminds me how worthless my job is in comparison:

Reckless:
Does the Beatles' book on instruments explain why they didn't buy Ringo a better drum kit and cymbals?
I'm sure Ringo would have been a more respected drummer if it hadn't sounded like he was hitting cold custard and dustbin lids!

Penguins Stopped Play by the late Harry Thompson.
(For the third time and still hilarious)
Any club cricketers who haven't read this are advised to rectify that immediately....
