What music are you currently listening to?
Re: What music are you currently listening to?
I've long regretted that I never saw Sarah Vaughan perform. Now, re-reading an old diary, I've discovered that, on 20th July 1987 at the Royal Festival Hall, I did see her. Have absolutely no recollection of the concert. To celebrate the fact that I've seen Sarah Vaughan (as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Anita O'Day and various other jazz divas who I do remember seeing), I'm listening to my favourite Sarah Vaughan song:

It's as sublime as ... oh, I don't know, Mark Hughes' goal yesterday.

Yesterday, my daughter said to me she wanted Train - Marry Me, to be played at her wedding (not that she's getting married just yet). Well, I've never heard of Train before (being a dinosaur stuck in the 70's and 80's) so I checked it out. Gosh, what a depressing dirge that was, I'm not sure I would want that played at funeral let alone a wedding. However, being the nice dad that I am, I won't be telling her that!grrgerald wrote: I've got Train blasting out !
So, I'm currently listening to this, it takes a while to get going, but it's different to say the least, much better than some of the tedious cr@p that TD have been churning out for the last ten years.

Indeed, and some Les Eason, Colin Powell, Ben Embury and Billy Meadows wouldn't go amiss either!

TD! Blimey, is Edgar Froese stil going?! Haven't listened to them since the 80s and they were one of the only decent electronic bands around (thank goodness for them and Kraftwerk - not forgetting Yello and Jean-Michel Jarre). Here is a cool live version of one of TD's best, Choronzon:

Thankfully these days way more decent electronica out there to choose from. For example, if you have never listened to the Signalrunners and/or Andrew Bayer, check this out:

Re: What music are you currently listening to?
Yes, Edgar is still alive and kicking, just! Nice to see another TD fan from the 80's. They were my fave band of all time, bought everything by them since I became a fan in 1977, accumulated a stack of bootlegs too (not Tangerine Trees though), and saw them in concert at least ten times. That track Choronzon was performed live at the Dominion London for the Logos album - I was there! The 70's and 80's were my favourite era, Rubycon is still my favourite album of all time, but the 90's and 00's have seen too many changes in personel and too many albums released, neglecting quality for quantity. Having bought everything that was going by them, I haven't bought anything by them for three years now, that's 22 albums (!!). Basically, the band lost its way when the driving force behind Edgar, Chris Franke left the band. When Jerome, Edgar's son joined the band, they became too drum 'n bass for my liking and the soaring moog modular sequencers seemed a distant memory in the past.
I still listen to Berlin School music a lot, but mainly Mario Schonwalder, Thomas Fanger, Detlef Keller and Bas Broekhuis (either as solo or group acts), they are producing what TD was doing in the 70's and 80's - only more up to date and totally sequencer driven. And of course, I absolutely adore Yello, another one of my all time fave bands, along with Kraftwerk, but I think JMJ has also lost his way too.
I like the Signalrunners video you posted, but that's getting into Trance/Dance (rather than electronic rock), where of course, there is stacks of good electronica, like Astral Projection, Man With No Name, Quench, Juno Reactor etc and some brilliant mixes by the likes of John '00' Fleming and Sasha & Digweed.
Here's some B, K & S I mentioned, the 'new' TD!!

Re: What music are you currently listening to?
I bow to your clearly extensive knowledge GD! I haven't bought anything by JMJ for years, but back in the day he was where it was at in the larger commercial sense at least. 'The Concerts in China' still quite a landmark, among others.
It was funny, I was re-arranging the house recently and have a LOT of old vinyl stored in a cupboard in my 8-year-old son's room. It is interesting trying to explain to someone who plays all the music he wants on Youtube, and has never even SEEN a record player, what all these old plastic black discs are for!
TD were huge for sure - think I am right in saying that "Phaedra" was what basically launched Dickie Branson and Virgin as a major label in about 1975. I guess EF just needs to keep going as he doesn't know anything else. 22 albums in 3 years is a bit scary though!
Was very happy when Kraftwerk toured in Toronto a few years ago, one thing on my "bucket list" was to see them play "Autobahn" live. Tick!

Listened to some different BKS on Youtube - seems quite ambient in its feel - though no doubt I am mixing up genres somewhat! Thanks for the tip - had never heard of them before.

BTW, nice post GMB!
Another all-time favourite has to be another B52 - Rock Lobster!

Totally unique in style (or lack thereof!), even now.

Re: What music are you currently listening to?
The Concerts In China is indeed a landmark album and still one of his best and Phaedra was TD's breakthrough album, thanks to John Peel plugging it to death on the radio. The selection of BKS on youtube isn't very representitive of what they do best, but check out some stuff by Fanger & Schonwalder on yt which is a bit more upbeat, like Yellow Stone (give it a minute or so to get going), Electronic Mirrors and Analog Overdose. Like most of their stuff, the music builds up, they add layer to layer to layer, so some tracks start off very slowly and quietly but by the end they are blowing your windows out. Also worth checking out Rainbow Serpent, Redshift (though there is hardly anything by them on yt (Crystaline 94 is good tho), Mark Shreeve (who is Redshift), Klaus Schulze, Robert Schroder, Neuronium.
I only saw Kraftwerk once at Hammersmith in 1981 on their Computerworld tour. Footage is quite rare but that concert blew me away as I had never seen anything like it before.
